CDPAP, which stands for Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, is a New York State Medicaid initiative that enables home care recipients to select, hire, and manage their own caregivers. A key feature of the program is that it allows consumers to employ family members and friends as caregivers.

Consumers must need help with daily living activities or skilled care, have a stable medical condition, and be capable of self-directing their care or have a designated representative who is willing and able to manage their care according to the program’s guidelines.

In the CDPAP program, you can choose almost anyone as your caregiver, including family members and friends. This means you can hire individuals such as your child, sibling, relative, or a close friend to provide your care. However, spouses may not serve as a personal assistant under CDPAP. Once Royal Care receives approval to begin services, you will be contacted by one of our trained professionals. They will set up an appointment to conduct an initial assessment in the home of the client.

After the initial assessment is completed, the level of care will be determined and the program can officially start! The caregiver will be trained and receive ongoing 24/7 support from our Royal Care professional team. Throughout the program, there will be weekly follow-ups and bi-monthly nursing visits.
